Comedy Special Event:
Mary Ellen Hooper
A veteran in the world of stand-up, Maryellen Hooper’s comedy has taken her from clubs and colleges to
theaters and television. She’s appeared on “The Dennis Miller Show”, “The Martin Short Show”, “The
Tonight Show” with Jay Leno and has had her own 1⁄2 hour special on Comedy Central called “Lounge
Lizards”. In 1998, the comedy industry awarded Maryellen “Female Comedian of the Year” at the
American Comedy Awards. A physical, storyteller, Maryellen's act is an ever-evolving story about her
life as a woman, wife and mother. Never crude or offensive, her accounts of life’s little annoyances leave
audiences exhausted from laughter. From home repairs on her family’s “Fixer Upper” to colicky babies, no
story is too sacred to share with her audiences. Maryellen just taped her latest stand-up special, "Stinky
Flowers" which will air this fall. The special is based on her stories about Wifedom and Mommy hood from
her hugely popular blog, Stinky Flowers.

People know Gary Valentine from 'The King of Queens' and they're expecting to see (Danny Heffernan)
instead of Gary being Gary. Valentine looks forward to live performances as a way to get people to see
his humor ---- as opposed to that of a screenwriter's.
That television work wasn't his primary goal is a little surprising. Back when he started his profession
in the early 1990s, other stand-up comics used the club stage as a springboard to television and movies.
Valentine could have taken the same track instead; he said he's content pursuing both laughs on screen
and at intimate comedy clubs. Valentine said that, done properly, playing for the camera has every bit
the thrill that club audiences have. "I love the immediate reaction from an audience," he said. "And the
reaction from a three-camera shot. There's nothing quite like that, either."
Valentine's steady work in television isn't too surprising. His brother Kevin James was the star of "The
King of Queens." Still, Valentine cut his teeth on the club circuit for 16 years developing a style of
humor that is aggressive, but not foul.
